Abstract:
In spring 1987 an excavation was carried out for many months at Phoinix, aneastern suburb of Thessaloniki, due to the construction of a new road. The research was mainly concentrated on the excavation of a big tumulus and itssurrounding area where a chamber tomb, four cist-graves and one pit-grave werefound. The Macedonian tomb, the earliest example in Thessaloniki, has a Doricfacade, an entablature covered with coloured plaster, and a pediment decorated with apainting. Two short benches and two altar-shaped bases containing the crematedbones were only found inside the tomb. The few vases and other objects ignored bythe ancient looters together with the architecture date the monument to the lastquarter of the 4th century B.C. The cist-graves contained relatively rich graveofferingsand date to the middle of the same century.Another tumulus, recently attacked by robbers, at Lakkoma in Chalcidicecontained a Macedonian tomb and a big cist-grave. The tomb consists of twochambers and was looted in antiquity, while the unlooted cist-grave is dated to thethird quarter of the 4th century B.C.Finally, during a short excavation of a low tumulus at Nea Anchialos in theprovince of Thessaloniki, a small square cist-grave made of poros stone wasdiscovered. The grave contained a cremation, and the ash-container, probably madeof precious material, was stolen in the antiquity.
