Abstract:
A systematic excavational research has been carried out in the last two years in an Early Iron Age cemetery at Palio Gynaikokastro of Kilkis. The site is included in French’ catalogue of Prehistoric sites, but it is known for the ruins of a Byzantine castle on the top of an impressive hill. The cemetery is about one kilometer far from the settlement which occupied the hill of the Byzantine castle. The northern, eastern and western bounds of the settlement indicate that its area was about 350 sq. m. The mechanical cultivation and the continuous ploughing of the land destroyed the original level, though the scattered data imply that the original surface was covered with mounds.370 vases containing cremations were found, all under piles of stones. The partial discovery of grave circles and the identification of the cremation area in the northwestern part of the cemetery are very significant. The pottery is both handmade and wheel made; the decoration is divided into a)incised, b) grooved and c) painted. The decorative motives are similar to those on the vases from other sites of the same period in Macedonia. Cut-away jugs, amphoriskoiand kantharos-shaped skyphoi predominate in pottery. The grave goods reveal the sex of the deceased: bronze jewellery accompany female burials, while iron weapons are found in male burials. Furthermore, the occurrence of bronze double axes is quite significant. According to the data, it seems that the cemetery was used in 1100-1000 B.C. Meanwhile, the same area was also used as a cemetery in the Roman period; 22Roman cist-graves and seven pit-graves were excavated in this site.
