Parallel Title:
Excavation of a neolithic settlement at Promahonas-topolnica, 1998
Abstract:
In the 1998 excavation period, phases II and III of the prehistoric settlement at Promahonas-Topolnica were investigated. We now have a fairly clear picture of the architecture ofphase II: pile-dwellings with large undressed stones at the base of the walls, floors of compactedearth, and ovens inside the houses. This year much of the ground plan was completed ofa pile-dwelling which had been partially unearthed previously. It is oriented NW-SE and, if it isa single building, is quite large.Of particular interest is a group of structures that were probably connected with theprocessing of bronze. They are 3 small round depressions lined with successive layers of clay, ash, and pottery fragments, and a deep pit in which was found a clay crucible. The first analysesof samples have produced encouraging results that support our initial interpretation. In the earliest phase, phase III, the architecture of the settlement appears different. Investigationsso far suggest that the dwellings were subterranean structures separated from eachother by the natural, unexcavated ground, which served as the base for the dividing walls. Thisyear, part of a higher (ground-floor) room was uncovered, surrounded by subterranean rooms. All these rooms were under a thick layer of ash.One of the most noteworthy finds of this period is a large stone phallic (?) sculpture thatwas found beside a fireplace.
