Archaeological excavations at Palatiano : perfecture of kilkis

The systematic archaeological excavations which began in 1993 at the Palatiano site and which are still continuing form part of a European Union Regional Development Programme. To date, they have brought to light much im­ portant information about the city which stood on the site in the Hellenistic and Roman periods.The location was known in particular for the Heroes’ Monument of the second century BC which was discovered there in 1961. Such information as ar­ chaeologists possessed about the ancient city had been derived from the limited excavations that followed the discovery of the Monument and did no more than indicate how important the site must be.Recent excavations have focused on the east side of the hill, and it was not until 1994 that digging began on the summit, revealing the polygonal circuit of walls that surrounded it. Apart from a second Heroes’ Monument, the east slopes have yielded sections of the urban fabric of the city, with buildings which were obviously inhabited between the Hellenistic and the Roman periods. Last year’s finds confirmed the fact that a metal-working shop had operated in the area during the fourth century BC. After the buildings were destroyed, the area was used for burials in the fourth century AD.The finds assembled to date (coins, figurines, small terracotta plaques, pottery, metal items, etc.) provide valuable information about the everyday lives of the inhabitants.
