Parallel Title:
Antiquities of ancient Eordaia in the district of Kozani
Abstract:
Survey and rescue excavation yielded important archaeological finds and contributed to the location of significant archaeological sites in ancient Eordaia of the Kozani district. Grave offerings, such as two bronze helmets and clay vases, from destroyed graves were found at Emporio of Anarrachi. A bronze helmet of Illyrian type was discovered at Exochi, product of illegal dealing in antiquities. Furthermore, trial trenches carried out in a well-known archaeological site belonging to this village, where the cult of Enodia was recorded in inscriptions, yielded two new inscriptions. Part of an inscribed stele and grave offerings of classical pit-graves were collected from the village of Hagios Christophoros. Archaeological research carried out at Pontokomi revealed an urban settlement of the Hellenistic and Roman period, where a house with impluvium was found. Finally, systematic excavation was carried out on the hill called Kastro (Castle)NW from Mavropiyi. A Hellenistic settlement was located and some of the houses were excavated. Besides the old finds of the Community, whose provenience is unknown, new finds were added; the most significant find among them is the late Hellenistic relief carrying a votive inscription to Apollo Hekatombios.
