Abstract:
The main aim of the excavation of 1988 in the Acropolis and the Lower city of ancient Edessa was the research of the wall. In the area of the Acropolis, the wall is only discovered during trial trenches in the foundations of the buildings of modern Edessa; thus a small part of the wall was found north from the Metropolis of Hagia Skepe. Its length is 2 m., its width 2.20 m. and the preserved height 2.70 m. The faces of the two upper rows were made of blocks with plaster connecting their joint surfaces and in the interior of the wall; they belong to a repair dated to the late Roman period. The rest belong to the original construction of the wall, consisting of blocks with a sunk marginal band at the face of the wall, while the interior contained stones and earth. The pottery presented in fig. 3 was found beside the third row of blocks. Furthermore, part of an ancient quarry was excavated in the SE part of the area of the Acropolis. The fill must be dated to the end of the Classical period and was probably related to the construction of the wall. The southern part of the fortification was excavated in the Lower city. Three parts of the wall were discovered in field no. 3087; some parts belong to the original construction of the fortification, others to the late Roman repair and finally, others to the repair carried out in the early Byzantine period. Future excavation of the walls will reveal the southern part of the fortification and the its relation to the cliff of Edessa.
