Abstract:
The excavations carried out in the five districts of Western Macedonia by the 17thEphorate of Classical and Prehistoric Antiquities at Edessa are presented in this paper. Most of the excavations were planned and systematic. The research at Ancient Pella was the most significant; it included the excavation of the Palace, the Agora, the area of the Canal and other minor sectors. The results were very significant and contributed to the real knowledge of the city. Two more excavations were carried out in the district ofPella: a) the excavation of the walls of ancient Edessa and b) the prehistoric excavation at Mandalo. The research of a Hellenistic city at Kypseli started in 1989 in the district of Emathia, while two more Hellenistic cities have been excavated in the district of Fiorina: a) at Petres and b) on the hill of Hagios Panteleemon just outside the modern town of Fiorina. A similar city with its cemetery has been excavated at Aiani in the district of Kozani. All these cities were built on hills and has similar characteristics. Their research provided new evidence for the history of Upper Macedonia. Finally, the activities of the Ephorate were completed with the new exhibition at the Museum of Pella.
