Parallel Title:
Evidence for the agriculture in ancient Pella
Author:
Abstract:
The excavation west of the main archaeological site of Pella revealed interesting architectural remains of two buildings and it also yielded evidence for an earlier use of the area, during which no edifice was built. Twenty one parallel rows of pits cut into the rock running from NW to SE at a distance 3.90-4 m. one from the other were discovered. The pits are rectangular (2-2.60x0.50 m.) filled with earth, their depth is about 0.50 m. with a distance 1.50-1.80 m. one from the other. The size of the area occupied by them, their organization and lack of relation to other buildings above, as well as the discovery of similar pits in other parts of the city suggest that they were used for systematic agriculture. The form and the size of the pits recall the evidence recorded by ancient writers for the plantation of trees and especially vines since the wine of Pella was included among the most famous brands. The texts on agriculture record evidence for the cultivation of earth. The archaeological finds concerning the cultivation of a specific plant in Pella is surprising, enligtening one more aspect of the life of the city.
