Abstract:
In the eastern sector of the ancient city to the south of the banquet hall was excavated an oblong room with a niche on the east. A marble statue of Dionysos was uncovered under the rubble of the wall of the niche. The floor of this room is covered by a mosaic. In the middle of this mosaic stands a panel showing Dionysos seated on a throne and holding a sceptre. To the west of the second atrium a room with a marble floor and two arched banks along the north and the south wall was excavated. In the debris to the south of this room a marble portrait was found dated from the beginning of the 3rd century A.D. Excavation of a new sector near the ancient harbour revealed rooms with large storage vases and the ruins of public baths. Among the sculptures found here was a torso of a young satyr. A special excavation was carried out on the ancient wells. In the well close to the Hellenistic theatre were found columns and capitals from the building at the mouth of the well. In the well in the small atrium of the Dionysos’ villa were pottery, glass, fragments of sculpture and wooden vases. The results of the excavation of the city wall are extremly important: a. in the recently uncovered north gate and b. in the NE corner. There was a change in the line of the city-wall at the north-east side and seems very probable that Dion was originally an «urbs quadrata»
