Abstract:
The systematic excavation of the small mountainous urban settlement of ancient Bisaltia started this year. The excavation was carried out in ten squares of the excavational grid (4x4 m.), in the highest plateau of the hill, where the fortification wall of the citadel was discovered last year. The excavation yielded the following evidence: a settlement of unknown original size was founded immediately after the middle of the 4th century, in an area occupied by continuous Iron Age habitation. The settlement of the 4th century survived for about 100 years and was destroyed probably by fire. The main axes of the urban-plan were preserved in the new one which replaced the old immediately after the destruction. However, the new plan was more developed in order to meet the needs of the increased population. Furthermore, it seems that the new plan employed a kind of grid based on the rectangular system. This phase of the small town lasted about a century (mid-3rd to mid-2nd centuryB.C.). The walls of the town were built during this period (in the 2nd century) and a narrow path existed between the town buildings and the walls to serve the circulation. In the 1st century B.C. this path was occupied by houses, due to the increase of population.
