Abstract:
The main aim of the excavations at Louloudies in 1994 was to excavate the branch line. Investigations also continued in the E apartments of the palace and the S enceinte, and excavation of the cemetery N of the complex was completed. The excavation site is that of a township which was a staging-post on the Thessaloniki-Larissa road and which preserved evidence of continuous habitation from Mycenaean times to the 7th c. AD. A fortress was built here in the 2nd half of the 5th c., containing a basilica, a bishop’s palace, and light industrial facilities for the production of wine and oil. The main gate of the complex is in the W enceinte; it was a double gate and formed a square tower with sides 5 m long, roofed with a cross-vault or sail-vault. The outer gate was a cataract or portcullis and the threshold still preserves the tracks of the wheels of the vehicles that crossed it. At later periods, two large storehouses were built inside the SW corner of the complex and a third outside the SW tower. Still later, these facilities were extended by the construction of a new gate outside the original one, from which it was possible to go in three different directions (N, S, W). To the N of the gate, a group of wine presses has been excavated, as has an olive press against the N enceinte. An examination of all these data makes it possible to document the productive and administrative role of the bishop’s palace in the Early Christian period
