Abstract:
Local pottery discovered during the excavation of the cemetery of Sindos carried out by Dr. K. Kostoglou-Despoinis is presented in this paper. More precisely local pottery comprises kantharoid kotylai, cut-away jugs and exaleiptra found together with imported vases which have been accurately dated. The latter date the local pots whose chronological evolution cannot be traced based on the evidence used in other cases. The cause is the extremely slow evolution of N. Greek pottery and the persistence of the potters in the traditional shapes such as the cut-away jug or the kantharoidkotyle. Furthermore, the restricted production of local pottery does not provide many chances for new shapes, inspirations, or refinement of the technique. Furthermore, no powerful state or cultural center was developed in this area during the 6th-5th centuries B.C., where artists would be gathered creating thus an artistic tradition which would influence the production of neighbouring workshops. However, minor local workshops with loose relations were scattered in the region. The most important among them were located in coastal areas with Ionic influence.
