Abstract:
The new excavation carried out by the University of Thessaloniki east from the episcopacy of the Octagone in the 4th residential unit of the city, yielded the western part of a big house. Two rectangular rooms on different levels and a small impluviumeast from them were revealed during the excavational season. Three bases belonging to the northern stoa (porch) of an atrium were discovered in the southern part of the rooms. The southern rooms located on a lower level near the atrium communicated through tripartite doorways, while their floor was covered with a mosaic dated to themid-4th century A.D.; similarly, another mosaic covered the floor of the northern room in the second half of the same century. Only parts of these mosaics survive, providing evidence for the reconstruction of the zones which surrounded the central themes. In the 6th century A.D. the rooms were used as storerooms for pithoi and the mosaics were destroyed. The earthquake of 615-620 A.D. destroyed Philippi and after the destruction a small house was built on top of the earlier building; the kitchen, the lavatory and the storeroom of the house were discovered. The small impluvium was used as a deposit for the useless pottery, the pots and the waste of the house. Finally, four building phases of the edifice were detected, from the 2nd (or even earlier) to the 9thcentury A.D.
