Abstract:
The excavation of the hill «Prophètes Helias» at Skala Soteros of Thasos in 1988yielded that below the floors with the pots covered with burnt clay, found in situ in1987, there were earlier buildings, such as walls and the buildings inside the perimeter wall, similar to the Protohelladic and Protocycladic citadels (pis. 2, 3). It was also discovered that repairs were carried out during this phase and also that later edifices were built on earlier ones. It was also discovered that menhir stelae were used as building material of the perimeter wall. Thus, the head of the big schist stele with the relief representation of the warrior, whose body was found in 1987 built in the western part of the wall, was discovered this year built in the lower part of the perimeter wall. The head of a marble menhir stele and an almost intact marble one were also found built in the same wall. The trial trenches carried out inside the perimeter wall, below the floor of the earliest phase, did not yield evidence for earlier habitation of the hill. However, the use of the menhir stelae in building of the perimeter wall shows that the latest phase of the Early Bronze Age of C. and E. Macedonia must be the terminus ante quem for their dating. The excavation of the southern part of the perimeter wall yielded that below the phases of the period from the 6th to the 4th century B.C., the wall was continued eastwards and one wall of a building in the interior was discovered covered with a layer of ash, food waste (bones and shells), sherds and other small objects. This layer belongs to the last habitation phase of the hill with the floors with the pots in situ, dated to the end of the Early Iron Age. Radio-carbon datings are waited.
