In the agora of Pella, excavations continued in 1993 in wells in the Eportico, in the S portico, and in the public building in the SW corner, the public record office. The well in area 3 was explored to a depth of 17 m. The fill consisted mainly of discarded pottery and waste material from pottery workshops, together with bones, metal objects, and quite a number of coins that date the layers of the fill to a period from Cassander's reign to the beginning of the2nd c. BC. Only one well, in area 14, was completely explored, the bottom being located at a depth of 19.2 m. The lower layers of the fill consisted of a compacted layer of smashed vases. The six areas of the S portico that were investigated this year belong to shops selling mainly liquid products, for the overwhelming majority of the finds relate to pointed amphorae, of the Latin, Brindisi, Cos, and Cnidus types. One unusual find was quantities of razor-fish ( Solenidae) shells in amphorae. Exploratory sections in the road to the S of the agora indicate that the lower layers date to the 2nd half of the 4th c. BC. An area in the NE corner of the record office was investigated. The destruction layer contained strong evidence of fire. The finds include tubular lead monoxide, a product of cupellation, the process by which silver is recovered from argentiferous lead
