Trial excavation trench at Abdera

Abstract:
The excavation of Abdera aimed at the research of the early Archaic Clazomeniancolony: its location, size and period of habitation. The research was carried out in the area of the northern wall of the city, called «Valta Zabake», because the excavational data suggested the existence of the earlier city. Thus, in 1988 a stratigraphic trial trench was carried out in the Avramoglou field and its adjacent property due to the collection of pottery of the second half of the 7thcentury from the surface of the ground. 23 small trenches were carried out which yielded that the fill was thin. Architectural remains of the 4th-3rd century B.C. were partially discovered (parts of walls and floors as well as a circular deposit-pit and another pit used for the storage of pointed amphorae cut into the rock. Pottery of the second half of the 6th and early 7th century was found in deep layers with thick fill(1.5-2 m.). A trench at the northern slope of the oblong raised platform which occupies the centre of Avramoglou field, probably created by the ruins of an ancient edifice, yielded evidence for an architectural phase of the late 7th century B.C. The 4th century phase was followed by an early Archaic phase as it is evidenced by the pottery found at the special top course of the foundation used as a leveling course of a destroyed wall ofthis building. Thus, the evidence of the trial trench attested the assumption for the location of the Clazomenian colony at «Yalta Zabake»
