Abstract:
The excavation of Messembria in Thrace was concentrated in two new trenches in the centre of the city.Part of a building block, bounded by two vertical paved streets (2.5-3 m. wide),was discovered in the western excavational trench. Foundations and walls of private houses were found in this block. The plan of the houses is similar to those discovered in other parts of the city with the paved courtyard located in the southern part and the rooms around in Π- or Γ-shaped organization. The finds —objects used in everyday life— date to the 5th-4th century B.C. The first significant find of the eastern excavational sector was the body of a marble kouros, dated to the 6th century B.C., probably the first half; it is the earliest sample of sculpture of the city and generally one of the earliest examples in northern Greece. Furthermore, the excavation yielded foundations of buildings, a paved floor made of rectangular slabs and another floor coated with insulating plaster, which was used in more than one building phases. The pottery, and especially more than forty coins found here, suggest the existence of an organized society until the 5th century A.D. It is very significant because up to this year only scattered evidence suggested the habitation of the city until the 4th century A.D. The recovery of a public building this year was also very important; it is rectangular recalling a prostyle temple in antis. Its dimensions are9x15 m. and the orientation ΝΑ-SW. Various artifacts comprising architectural fragments, terracotta figurines, sherds and marble pieces of sculpture were found inside the sanctuary and inside the temple. More than 100 sherds of kylices, dedications to thesanctuary, were inscribed. The name of god Apollo is recorded in all inscriptions and thus, it seems that the temple should probably be attributed to him. It is the first time that such a great quantity of pottery is found, implying that the city was organized in that period and thus, her peak should be probably dated one century earlier
