Abstract:
The ethno archaeological research in the area of the Pomak settlements in highland Rhodope was continued by the Museum of Komotini in the summer of 1988. It included the excavation of the site of Tsouka in the vicinity of the village of Sarakini where the remains of an Early Iron Age site had been revealed last year. Moreover, the ethnographic study of the traditional pottery production of the Pomak villages was continued; the study was particularly focused on the recording of the manufacture process of a specific household vessel (ponitse). The excavation in the site of Tsouka uncovered the existence of two perimeter(surrounding) walls running along the north, west and east side of the hill. Their function was not defensive as it was firstly considered. Architectural features—partitions inside the enclosed area, small stone structures— indicate that probably the site was related to specific herding activities (separating animals, milking etc.). It was interesting to note the modern traditional structures used by the Pomak pastoralists which bear striking constructional and architectural similarities with the prehistoric finds. It is possible therefore that ethnoarchaeological observations can contribute to the better understanding of the human occupation in highland Thrace during the prehistoric period and especially the Early Iron Age.
