The Palatianos excavation, 1993

The purpose of the excavation of the lakeside settlement at Dispilio in1993 was: 1) to continue the horizontal exposure of the features of the spatial organization extending the excavations towards the lake; and2) to explore the earth fill in depth to determine the chronological termini of the prehistoric settlement. On the basis of the pottery, the early phases have been dated to the start of the Late Neolithic and the later phases to the end of the Late Neolithic. The material remains show similarities with those in nearby areas, such as Thessaly, Albania, and Pelagonia, which suggests there was some degree of com -munication between them. Dispilio seems to have played a particularly important role in this communication. The ultimate aim, however, is to find out not only what form the communication took, but also why it developed and for whose benefit
