Abstract:
The ruins of St. Nicolas are found on the western shore of Lake Prespa, southeast from village Pyle (Vinene), 850 m. above the sea-level. The level of the lake is not stable, depending on the rainfalls; quite often the western shore and the nearby fieldsare flooded and even the interior of the temple is full of water. The temple was known to the scholars interested in the Byzantine era. When Miljukov visited lake Prespa in 1892, he saw the temple; he took photographs and his description was accompanied by a drawing of the brick-decoration of the western wall. Since that time, the temple has been recorded in many publications, however, a proper drawing of its plan was missing. Later, Jordan Ivanov discussed the temple (Bulletin dela Société Archéologique Bulgare, 1, 1910, pp. 55-80). A discussion is also found in the Βυζαντινά και Μεταβυζαντινά μνημεία της Πρέσπας (Θεσσαλονίκη 1960, ρρ.52-62) by S. Pelekides. There is a plan and a section and also some photographs of the monument. Finally, I dealt with this temple, too: Εκκλησίες του Νομού Φλωρίνης(Thessaloniki 1964) and also «Byzantinische und Nachbyzantinische Baudenmäleraus Klein-Prespa und aus Hl. German» (Byzantinisch-Neugriechische Jahrbücher, voi.20, Athens 1968, pp. 20-30).The excavation yielded evidence about the correct plan of the temple and the drawn reconstruction of its huge dome, preserved in an old photograph by N. P. Miljukov (1892). An incised inscription provided an accurate dating to the Palaeologean period (1293), which was before dated from the 11th to the 14th century.
