Abstract:
An excavation was carried out at the cemetery of the monumental tombs at Leivadia; it aimed at the location of the pit-graves to the east and the investigation of the older trenches. This area did not yield any grave; however, we located a prehistoric layer and we excavated a hearth (1 m. diam.) with traces of fire. The sherds suggest a dating earlier than that based on the matt-painted and Mycenaean pots which had been discovered to the south. Furthermore, the hearth does not imply a purely funerary use of the area. Thus, the problem of the interpretation of these pots in that area, which had originallybeen associated with the graves, arose. On the other hand, the excavation of the trenches yielded an undisturbed grave with a contracted skeleton and two distrurbed ones with grave-goods: matt-painted pots and a Mycenaean alabastron. The other pit-graves were an unlooted one dated tothe 5th century and two Hellenistic looted burials. The excavation of 1990 yielded finds which enriched our knowledge of the second phase: new types of figurines, bronze vessels and pottery. The discovery of inscribed monuments, such as an inscribed black-glazed early 5th kantharos, an inscribed probably earlier fragment of a pithos lip, an inscribed fragment of a tile of themid-5th century B.C. These are among the earliest inscriptions of Macedonia. We believe that the lack of discovery of inscriptions was due to the limited and not systematic excavation.
