Abstract:
The water supply of ancient Dion was provided by Helikon river, 5 km far from the city. The aquaduct has been located in a ravine called Xeroloki, northwest from Dion. One part of it, before its joint with the central cistern, situated by a gate of the western part of the fortification wall, has been excavated. This part of the aquaduct, consisting of a thick wall which supported the water pipe, is equipped with five arches. Two of these arches correspond to fortification ditches and the rest to roads covered with pebbles. The central cistern was built in the early 2nd century A.D.; it is made of carefullycut stones and mud-bricks. Two wells which supplied the private houses and the baths with water, were located at the northeastern and the southeastern corners respectively. A third well at the eastern side, which originally supplied the public fountains with water, was replaced by a small cistern after an earthquake which destroyed the central cistern. The eastern side of this cistern was shaped into a continuous fountain. Such an arrangement of wells which supplied separately the private houses, the fountains and the baths with water is also recorded in ancient sources (Vitruvius, Frontinus).
