Abstract:
Mende. The investigation of the stratigraphic trench at the beach of Mende, was completed in 1990. Successive archaeological layers, 3.40 to 5.60 m. deep, were excavated. Two circular stone paved areas, diam. 1.80 m were found in the interior of house H, dating to the second half of the 8th cent. B.C.; they recall similar constructions at Lefkandi of Euboea and their function is still uncertain. Remains of house Θ were found 0.40 m. deeper than the above constructions, while the pottery found on the floor dates to 750 B.C. Six more layers of habitation were investigated below house Θ; the earliest probably date to the mid-9th cent. B.C., according to the sub-Protogeometric sherds. Poseidi. The systematic investigation of cape Poseidi, 4 km west from Mende, started this year after the trial trenches of 1989. Remains of two big buildings were discovered. Building A (8.35 m. wide and more than 20 m. long) had the plan of a temple with a porch and an oblong cella. The northeastern angle of building B has been incorporated in the southern wall of the porch; it seems that building B was still in use after building A was built. Only the foundations of both buildings survived and just a small part of the wall of the northern side: According to the excavational data, building A dates to the 5thcent. B.C., while building B dates to the late Archaic period; it was used in the Hellenistic period, while a small kiln was built above the foundation of the northeastern corner in the Roman period. The southern part of temple A is founded in an open area for sacrifices, dated to the second half of the 6th cent. B.C. Animal bones and broken vases —mainly kylices—were found in the excavated sandy soil. The votive inscriptions inscribed mainly on the kylices imply that it was a sanctuary of Poseidon. In the 5th cent. B.C. they started to collect the remains of the sacrifices in pits.
