The sea-side cemetery of Mende
Abstract:
The systematic excavation at ancient Mende yielded part of the early Archaic cemetery of the city. It is discovered on the coast of MENDE hotel, and there is evidence suggesting that it is also extended under the buildings of the hotel.241 burials (177 burials in pots, 39 pit-graves and three cist-graves) were found in the two excavational periods (1989-1990), which present similarities with other contemporary cemeteries of northern Greece. The pots containing burials are interesting, and namely the pithoi, the amphorae and other stamnoid pots, hydriae and hand-made krater-shaped vases. The 30.5% ofthe pots had painted or incised decoration with geometric or floral motives. Most of them were probably made in a local, chalcidic workshop and were influenced by the tradition of the islands (Euboea-Cyclades) and Aetolia-Ionia (Larissa, Pittane, Samos),while there is also a group of pithoi with characteristic decoration recalling Central and Western Macedonian devices. The pots from Mende are earlier than the similar ones from Polychrono and those from Olynthus and Pyrgadikia, which are dated before the Persian Wars. Their comparative study and the study of the grave goods date the cemetery to the period from the late 8th or early 7th to the late 6th century B.C.
