Abstract:
The excavations on the double table at Anchialos were confined to the lower table in 1995 with the aim of uncovering a building, part of which had already been brought to light in earlier excavational periods. We thus dug five new trenches, Δ6, Δ7, Δ8, Δ9, and Δ10, and re-examined the data from trenches Δ1 and Δ3.We uncovered some brick walls running SE-NW and NE-SW, which unquestionably belong to the building under investigation, the destruction layer on the floor of the building, some smaller brick walls, which probably indicate rooms, and two doorways. As far as the interpretation of the building is concerned, some interesting finds include two disk-shaped terminals from the handles of large, possibly “ceremonial”, vessels and a conical structure of ashes. The building very probably dates to the 2nd half of the 8th c. BC, judging by the imported Attic and, particularly, Euboian pottery found in the destruction layer. The quantity and the quality of these Euboian wares lend further support to the notion that a Euboian emporium may have been established here.A pit in trench Δ8 was also investigated and found to contain pottery of the 7th and 6th cc. BC, seemingly thrown into the trench all at once.
