Excavation at the acropolis of Vergina

The excavation at the acropolis (citadel) of Vergina started in 1980. The remains of the foundation of the peribolos (2,80 m. thick), made of local stones, were discovered. A gate, 3 m. wide, served for the communication of the acropolis with the city, while an aqueduct, equipped with clay pipes, supplied the acropolis with water. The construction of the peribolos of the acropolis dates to the end of the 4th or the beginning of the 3rd century B.C.; private houses and workshops were built inside the citadel in the Hellenistic period. Part of the inner side of the fortification wall was discovered in 1989, not far from the gate, while the remains of a late Hellenistic building in the northwestern part of the acropolis were also located.
