The monumental propylon of the palace of Pella

Abstract:
The size of the palace of Pella is 6 acres; it is a well-organized group of palatial buildings, and consists of three independent, but related to each other, units. Two of them are related with a common façade consisting of a stoa on a high podium (pedestal) like a veranda. The propylon occupies the centre of the stoa, and although it is badly preserved, it can be reconstructed. A ramp, 15 m. wide, led to the propylon. Four columns (1,20 m. diam.) are found in front of the entrance, and thus, there is a large room whose one side is occupied by the entrance of the palace, while the veranda is accessible from the left and the right sides. A second room with five doorways led to a third room of the same width; the flanking courtyards were accessible from the doorways of this third room. The hypsometric differences of the rooms around the propylon are being studied.
