Abstract:
In 1989 the eastern side of a church and parts of its walls were discovered during atrial trench in the northeastern part of the Castle of Platamon, not far from the fortification wall. The first excavational season yielded the following evidence: 1. Two earlier building phases of the edifice were detected.2. Byzantine sculpture of the 10th-11th century had been used in the decoration of the church.3. The walls had been painted twice. Some paintings were preserved «in situ» and traces of paintings were also discovered. The later wall-paintings date to the 16th-l 7thcentury. Therefore, based on the paintings and other interesting pottery finds, the last building-phase of the church dates to the same period. Thus, the archaeological research provided new evidence for the history of the Castle: the existence of the Castle in the 10th century and the use of the Castle by the Christians in the 16th and the 17th centuries were confirmed. The excavation is being continued providing interesting data.
