Abstract:
The project for the development of the Prefecture of Kilkis included a three-yearplan for the excavational research of the archaeological sites of the area of Paionia. The short-dated programme required results in a short period of time. Therefore, apart from the traditional archaeological exploration, other contemporary methods, such as the geophysical survey, were also employed. This method provides the archaeologist with the privilege to choose the most interesting sectors, and furthermore, this way the excavational season and the cost of the dig are reduced. This project was carried out by the Museum of Thessaloniki and the Department ofGeophysics of the University of Thessaloniki. The excavation of the archaeological sites was not the aim of this project; the appropriate prerequisites for archaeological exploration, and namely the definition of the features of a site, e.g. the size, the plan of a city, the location of the cemeteries etc., were the main targets. The above evidence can effectively contribute to the protectionof a site: the setting of the use of land, exchange of fields or the explopriation of land. The project started from Europos, the well-known ancient city. The results were the following: the discovery of a part of a Roman house at the citadel of the city and the location and excavation of a part of the Roman cemetery of the city. 31 graves were excavated, and among them two looted chamber tombs covered with a vault and onecist-grave. Among the covering slabs of the latter was the base of a statue of Marcus Insteius in second use. All the graves date to the early or middle Imperial period. The geophysical chartography of a part of the citadel and the cemetery and the discovery of a vaulted tomb, which had been excavated by Kotzias in 1938 and has been considered lost since then, were also accomplished during the excavation.
