Preliminary observations on the building phases at the settlement of Toumba Thessaloniki

Abstract:
The excavations at Toumba continued in 1989 aiming at the better understanding of the successive phases of the site. Six main building phases were established at the topsector of the excavation dating from the 11th century to the 6th century B.C. The overall pattern of the settlement remains unchanged during the five earliest phases which cover the final Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. The pattern changes significantly at the latest phase of the settlement dated provisionally to the 6th century B.C. During the earlier periods the settlement comprises narrow lanes separating blocks of multiroom houses and storerooms. The excavation of the side of the mound revealed a succession of five phases of large constructions built right at the edge. During the four earlier phases dated to the Late Bronze Age the constructions are organised in systems of retaining terraces supporting an alley leading to the top. Behind this alley there are walls forming acontinuous line of enclosed spaces filled with compact earth. The size of these walls varies from phase to phase and reaches up to three metres of height and six metres of width. It is still undetermined whether these systems serve defensive or retaining purposes. The pattern of the constructions of the side changes during the last phase dated to the Early Iron Age. There is no alley and the side is organised in a successive series of low terraces. For the first time the space of the top of the terraces is occupied by domestic constructions, indicating a private rather than a communal use of this part of the settlement.
