Abstract:
The evidence concerning the Hellenistic phases of Thessaloniki, provided by the recent excavation of various building-grounds of the city, is presented in this paper. Namely, the data of the research in a part of the Hellenistic fortification, as well as the excavation of the building-grounds at 14-16 Kassander street, 21-23 Kassander street,16 Gr. Palamas street (Navarinou square), and in Kassander-Paster-Makedonikes Amynes street led to the following conclusions:1. The Hellenistic buildings of the city followed two building axes. The earlier ones, probably dated to the reign of Kassander, present a declination to the north. The axes of the second phase, dated to the late Hellenistic period, are the same with those of the plan of the Roman period.2. The western part of the city was inhabited in the late Hellenistic period, when the city was extended. The earlier part of the city was probably the northeastern one.3. The southern bounds of the city are defined by the following data: a) the southern bounds of the natural rock are found between Kassander and Hagiou Demetriou streets, b) the metal kiln, discovered at 91 Philippou street, was outside the walls of the city, and c) the size of the city of Kassander could not exceed the limits ofher era. Thus, the southern bound of the Hellenistic city should be located between Olympou and Philippou streets.4. The stoa at the southern part of Navarinou square was probably used as an agora (market), related to the Hellenistic port.
