Abstract:
Four graves dated to the late Archaic and Classical periods came to light during a short rescue excavation carried out at field no. 8041 of the rural area of Epanomi. One of them contained no grave goods, while the other three yielded two figurines of Pan, a few clay vessels and many pieces of jewellery made of glass, bronze and silver. A pair of double silver rings are particularly interesting: their location in Grave 1suggests their use as earrings and not as bracelets as it had been considered up to that time. They were suspended from thin bronze rings which perforated the lobes of theears, like the silver earrings of Grave 2.Two more pairs of bronze rings with protuberances, quite popular in Macedonia from the Early Iron Age until the beginning of the 5th century B.C., are of special interest. These had been interpreted as parts of horse harness, or apotropaic pendants, while a new interpretation as parts of the belt has been suggested in this case.
