Abstract:
During building activities in the rural area of Hagios Mamas, north from Potidaia, part of the well-known and extended cemetery of ancient Kassandreia was discovered. Four stone sarcophagi, one cist-grave, three tile-covered graves and two pit-graves, dated from the late 4th to the mid-3rd century B.C. were excavated. The five large tombs with common characteristics and rich grave-goods probably constituted one family group; their relation to the smaller ones has not been identified yet. Sarcophagus no. 2 contained the burial of a young woman; in the interior, the three lateral sides were painted with a floral guilloche pattern, while the fourth side by the skull, was decorated with a female bust, probably representing the deceased. The most significant of the grave goods of these tombs were many pieces of gold jewellery, two silver vessels, a bronze oinochoe, an iron spear-head decorated with a gold ribbon-shaped strip, an extremely large iron sword recalling those used by military officers, alabaster and clay pots etc.
