Macedonian tomb at Solenas in Chalcidice

In 1988 a Macedonian tomb was discovered at Solenas, on the eastern shore of Kassandra in Chalcidice. Both the tomb and the tumulus were discovered much damaged. Only parts of the eastern and the northern walls and parts of the floors and the funerary stone klinai (couches) were preserved, while architectural members were scattered in the neighbouring area. The reconstruction of the tomb poses certain problems concerning the roof, the orientation and the size. However, according to the excavational data it seems more possible that the funerary monument was a Macedonian tomb with one chamber and entrance from the south, while the dimensions were probably 2,70x3,40 m. The finds, and mainly the pottery discovered in the area of the funerary klinai, date the monument to the last quarter of the 4th century B.C., a period after Chalcidice had been annexed to the Macedonian kingdom. Finally, the tomb is associated with the city occupying the hill by the monument.
