Abstract:
The trial trenches at the basilica of Nikiti in Chalcidice, the so-called basilica of Sophronios, named after the bishop recorded in the mosaic floor, was presented in the2nd Symposium of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Archaeology and Art in 1982. The excavation was continued in 1982-3 and 1987-9 and during this period the wholechurch and its auxiliary buildings came to light. It is a basilica with a nave and two aisles terminating into a semi-circular niche to the east, a narthex and a stoa to the west and is equipped with a baptistery to the northwest. The width in the interior is 14,70 m. and the length of the church without the niche 14,60 m., a square. Apart from the type of the plan, the decoration of the church is also very significant for its excellent quality and preservation: mosaics, wall-paintings, marble decoration, capitals, trabeation, small pillars. The sculpture, the marble decoration with the «opus sedile» technique, the wall-paintings and the mosaics date the basilica to the first half of the 5th century A.D.
