The excavation at Skala Soteros

Three sectors of the excavation of the Prehistoric settlement of Skala Soteros on the island of Thasos were explored this year:1. The northern part of the hill —trench VII—, where buldings of the Early Christian period were located.2. The western part of the hill —trench VI—, where the western perimeter wall (peribolos) was discovered as well as a wall of another edifice, probably a tower. Finally two retaining walls of the 6th and 4th centuries respectively were also excavated.3. Inside the northwestern angle of the perimeter wall —the area of gate 1. In a stratigraphic trench a wall of a building dated to the earliest building phase of the EarlyIron Age was located. This wall belongs to an apsidal edifice and its filling yielded the head of a menhir stele; the characteristics of the head were engraved. However, there is no evidence concerning the origin of the fragments of the menhir stelae which were incorporated in the buildings of the earliest phase during the Early Iron Age. The discovery of a marble menhir stele with the representation of a warrior at Potoin southern Thasos, not far from the Prehistoric settlement of Kastri implied that this type of stele was popular on the island.
