Abstract:
A stratigraphic trench carried out in Abramoglou’s field, in the area of «Valta Zabaki» by the northern perimeter wall II of ancient Abdera, yielded evidence for the existence of a building phase of the late 7th century B.C. Based on these data the excavation of a badly damaged house started in this field. The house was covered by a destruction layer of fire. Just a few rooms were preserved, a bath and another room with a large threshold at the entrance. Two building phases are distinguished: one dates to the late Archaic period, and another of the second half of the 4th century B.C. Building and decoration material of the earlier phase was used in the last one, while the original plan was at least partially preserved. Finally, the remains of a Roman non-permanent occupation were also located in the eastern part of the ruins. The discovery of this house proved that the area of the northern perimeter wall of Abdera was inhabited from the late Archaic until the early Hellenistic period. Only scattered rural settlements existed in the Roman period, when the area of the southern perimeter wall was inhabited.
