Abstract:
The first aim of the 1989 excavation season was to clarify the character and function of certain areas and structures which were uncovered last year. This was achieved mainly by extending the excavated area of Area B (Squares B1-B2-B3-B4) to the north and east. Thus a number of new trenches 5 m. by 5 m. were opened (B5-B7-Β8-Δ1), while the dig of the so-called Stratigraphic Trench continued with interest in results. The prehistoric deposits were very rich in arcitectural remains and portable finds. The features of Square B1 (large clay bins cut into the floor, probably for storage —a well preserved plaster floor— large quantity of pottery) were found in the adjacent Square B8 which indicates a well defined context regarding its extend and function. As far as the latter is concerned the revealing between B1 and B8 of an impressive clay structure and three objects made of solid clay, conical in form with oval base and two short «horns» in the upper part may indicate a ritual context. In Square B7 a number of well stratified plaster floors were uncovered. A carefully constructed rectangular shaped structure made of layers of stones, sherds, earth and refractory clay was found. Similar «thermal structures» have been found in other Balkan neolithic sites (McPherron-Srejovic 1988, 49). The newly opened Square Δ1brought to light parts of well preserved walls of two rectangular houses consisting of wooden posts, pisé and light superstructure. All the provisional evidence indicate that the prehistoric settlement of Makri belongs mainly to the middle to late Neolithic (balkan Chalcolithic) of the 5thmillennium B.C.
