Abstract:
The subject of the «bird and cage» in a mosaic from an Early Christian building at Maroneia, stimulated the effort for the interpretation of this representation. This paper mainly deals with the following:1. Whether there was a specific intention for symbolism in this subject, springing either from the artist or the employer. Whether the location of this subject in the whole decoration and its relation to the other subjects defined its symbolic interpretation or not. The majority of the preserved mosaics —most of them in the eastern provinces of the empire— do not suggest a symbolic interpretation.2. The specific representation is related to the iconography of the subject of the bird hunting, known from the Roman and Early Christian periods. The bird, inside or outside a cage, is an iconographie element of this scene. Its presence, detached from the hunting scene, in the Early Christian mosaics, could probably be interpreted as an isolation of this subject, which eventually became a simple decorative motive.
