Abstract:
About four km. east from ancient Pella, by the road connecting Pella to Chalcedon, and across the sixth easternmost mound of the city, a new Macedonian tomb, II, came to light by chance on October 6th, 1992. The tomb was unlooted and contained a few grave goods; some of them are rare and precisely dated, providing a clear idea of the contents of such tombs and their architectural evolution. Originally, the tomb was covered with a low tumulus and it was equipped with a narrow «dromos» formed in three successive teraces from west to east. The tomb consists of one chamber, it is covered with a vaulted roof and is built with local limestones. The façade (4.50 m. high) consists of nine raws of stone slabs, which cover the whole height, except for the upper part of the vault. The lintel, the façade and the chamber are decorated with a cornice cavity. The doorway did not employ shutters, but it was blocked with a wall of stone slabs. The plan of the chamber is square (4.06 m. side), while the circle of the roof is inscribed to the level of the its floor. The roof consists of eleven oblong trapezoid slabs. A marble sarcophagus which contained the wooden chest with the cremated bones of the deceased wrapped in a gold-purple cloth was found in the middle of the eastern side of the tomb. Two gold myrtle wreaths, a gold state of Philip II, imitation in gold of an ornament in the shape of a shoe, and a gold lanceolate leaf, originally bearing the name of the deceased written with ink, were all found in the tomb. Furthermore, some clay, metal and glass goods were found scattered on the floor, around the sarcophagus; they date to the late 3rd or early 2nd century B.C. The careless structural details, as well as the number, type and the quality of the finds suggest that the tomb belonged to a young woman who died in the second period of reign of Philip V, which started in 197 B.C.
