Systematic excavation at toumba of Archontiko at Giannitsa in 1992

After a long preparation and the approval of the Ministry of Culture, the systematic excavation at the mound of Archontiko of Giannitsa started carriedout equally by the 17th Ephorate of Antiquities of Edessa and the Archaeological Faculty of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The Ephorate of Antiquities focused on sections I, III and IV. Remain’s of Hellenistic and Byzantine habitation were excavated at section I. Two trial trenches carried out at section IV yielded findings of the late Iron Age, and mainly a great quantity of pottery with a slip. The findings of the excavation, the surface pottery and the objects granted to us do suggest the great significance of the site
