Abstract:
In the summer of 1992 three projects, a) the second branch of the motorway connecting Thessaloniki to Katerini, b) the natural gaz pipe and the new railway connecting Athens to Thessaloniki, started in northern Pieria. Because of the above projects, our Ephorate was forced to carry out a great number of excavations. A Roman cemetery was excavated at Katerini. A late Classical and early Hellenistic settlement was found at «Krania» of Korinos, while a Bronze Age settlement and cemetery was unearthed at «Toumbes» of Korinos. The excavation of a settlement dated from the Bronze Age to the Roman period was located at «Louloudia» of Kitros. Finally, the excavation at five sites of Makrygialos started: a Classical, Hellenistic and Roman cemetery, an extended late Neolithic settlement, and the water supply pipe of ancient Pydna. The paper is mainly referring to the excavation of the cemetery at fieldsnos. 279 and 280 of Makrygialos: pit - and cist-graves with rich grave goodsdated from the second quarter of the 4th to the mid-2nd centuries B.C. came to light there. The excavation of the southern cemetery of Pydna at Chrysochoidis’ field continued in 1992; the field has been excavated since 1984, and the total number of graves is fourty-six. Most of them are pit - and cist-graves, while there is also an one-chamber Macedonian and a rock-cut tomb consisting of two chambers. The tombs date from the second half of the 4th to the mid-2ndcentury B.C.; most of them were found unlooted and yielded rich grave goods
