Abstract:
In 1992 the excavation at the Double Table of Anchialos focused on the continuation of the excavation at trenches A and B (whose research had started in the past), while one more area Γ, at the lower part of the Table, was also excavated. At trench A we reached the late Mycenaean layer, where aterrace of clear yellow clay strata interrupted by gravel sand zones and reinforced by mud-bricks and mud-brick walls, was located. Similar Iron Age terraces were located at trench B: those were more impressive, and were reinforced by trenches of trees. The size of these terraces contributes to the understanding of how these mounds and Tables acquired their distinctive height. A big pit containing potsherds, a few terracotta figurines and bronze small objects and coins were excavated in area Γ. Most of the finds date to the Classical period and the 4th century B.C. The pottery was imported (many black-glazed skyphoi, cylices and cylix-skyphoi with stamped and incised decoration, bowls, kantharoi, oinochoae, lekanides, lekythoi, plates, lamps, askoi and red-figure sherds), local, and pointed pithoi of various workshops (of Thasos, of Mende etc.). In the 4th century B.C., at the time of the founding of Thessaloniki, the «refuse» was thrown into the pits. The inhabitants of the ancient city located on the Double Table of Anchialos participated in the synoicism of Thessaloniki. This coastal settlement is not identified with Chalastra, but with Sindos. According to our opinion, ancient Chalastra should be located by Axios river, in the significant archaeological site of modern Hagios Athanasios and Gephyra
