Excavation at ancient Arethousa

Abstract:
Ancient Arethousa, named after a water spring, is found on a hill of the Macedonian Tempi, not far from the Byzantine castle of Rentina. The city islocated on a plateau in the northwestern part of the hill, while to the east, the citadel with a cross-wall is easily distinguished, nowadays covered with woods. There is scattered historical evidence on the city, which does not illuminate the conditions of her founding. Arethousa is mentioned as a Chalcidean colony, and more rarely as a Thraco-Macedonian city in the area of Mygdonia. The excavation of this site, carried out by the 16th Ephorate of Prehistoricand Classical Antiquities, started in March 1992, after the illegal building of a forest road within the archaeological site. Hundred twenty nine graves (covered with tiles, pit graves, and cremations) of the cemetery, dated from the mid-4th to the mid-2nd centuries were excavated. The grave goods consist of plain and black-glazed pottery, mainly bronze and iron jewellery, strigils, and coins. No arm was found, while the children’s burials yielded many terracotta figurines. A trial trench at the northwestern part of the area yielded part of the western fortification-wall of the city, 5.30 m. long, and the foundation of a late Classical circular tower. The survey and the excavational data cannot solve the problem of the first habitation of the area. It is highly probable that the Archaic and Classical finds of the neighbouring hill of the Byzantine castle must be related to the first stages of habitation of the city
