Rescue excavation at Potidaia of Chalcidice

Archaeological research was carried out at field no. 129 in 1991-2, by the southern boundary of the modern village of Potidaia. Architectural remains dated from the 5th century B.C. until the early Roman period, and divided into three building phases, came to light. A few fragmentary stone walls, found to the deeper layers, date to the earliest phase. The second building phase dates to the first half of the 4th century B.C. Most of the ruins belong to it. Namely parts of two houses made of stones, each one comprising at least four rooms. One occupies the northern part of the field, while the second the southwestern part. A paved street is located between them. Finally, part of an early Roman building made of stones was discovered in the northwestern part of the field. The excavation yielded many movable finds, about one thousand seven hundred small objects and more than three hundred-eighty coins. The pottery was very interesting with the earlier sherds from Corinthian and Attic black -and red - figure vases. The trenches also yielded many terracotta figurines belonging to many types. Finally, fourty-eight stamped handles of amphorae (primarily from Thasos), and a significant sherd from a Panathenaic amphora with a chariot race and the inscription ΑΡΙΣΤΟΒΟΥΛΟΣ / ΕΥΒΟΥΛΙΔΟΥ /[APjMATI... were also found
