Abstract:
A short season confined to the settlement located the exterior south wall of the large Early Iron Age building mentioned in previous reports. The south wall had been founded on the remains of an earlier wall, and ran across another, also earlier, at right-angles . A test below the building’s floor revealed a deep layer of sandy wash, with few finds, which continued to bedrock. On the bedrock lay part of a pithos mended with lead clamps. The west end of the building lay outside the excavation’s limits. Sherds and stone tools were the only finds in it, and its purpose remains uncertain. Just outside the building’s north wall, an EIA pithos with a stone lid still in situ was set in the side of a deep hollow in the bedrock. As found, it contained only earth. Near this werescattered the fragments of a sopastone mould, lumps of burnt clay and small scraps of charcoal. One side of the mould had matrices for part of a blade and an unusual tang or handle; the other side had settings for three billets or rods of metal, suitable for working up into small objects, or for export. The settlement’s unusually numerous stone tools, mostly pebble poundersor grinders, could well have been used in metal-working. There are two disused mines within 5 kms. of the site, and according to the IGME map, these are the only ore outcrops in the whole Sithonia sub-peninsula; one has deposits of galena/copper, and the other galena/iron pyrites. If the inhabitants of Koukos were exploiting the district’s mineral resources, it would be a reason for the site’s contact with more southerly parts of Greece, as suggested by some of the cemetery pottery.
