Regulation plan of Amphipolis

Amphipolis, one of the most significant archaeological sites of Northern Greece, flourished in the antiquity. Her advantageous location combined with the quality of the monuments and the archaeological finds promise a great and quick development of the archaeological site and the surrounding area. In order to solve the problems which will be posed by the development, aregulation plan is necessary, aiming at the following: a) The study of the archaeological site of Amphipolis in relation to the surrounding region of Macedonia and Thrace, in order to be included in the developing, touristic, economic and cultural projects. b) The protection of the archaeological site and its immediate surrounding from the «development» of the area. c) The understanding of the problems and the needs of the archaeological site and the evaluation of the solutions. The great significance of the monuments and the size of the archaeological site, combined with the historical landscape, recorded by Thucydides, led to the systematic drawing and cataloguing of the elements of the region which define the site that has to be protected. Besides the «important» sites, areas inside the city-walls, those whose excavation yielded buildings and areas related to them, we also defined «perimetricalzones» around them, in areas related visually or functionally to the above. Two types of index cards were used for the cataloguing of the features of the above sites and zones including description, drawing and visual evidence. The sites and the zones together define the region which will be protected, while the entry of the features and the problems resulted in the creation of three zones, with different protection levels and in the suggestion of specific solutions
