Abstract:
The excavation of three ancient houses located in three successive archaeological layers, in the area of the northern enclosure of Abdera was completed in 1992. The latest of the three —house A— located immediately below the surface of the ground, consists of three rooms; one of them was the bath, while the finds of the destruction layer date the edifice to the second half of the 4th or the beginning of the 3rd century B.C. An agricultural construction was built above the house in the Roman period. Parts of another house —Γ— was located immediately below the foundation of house A; this dates to the second half of the 5th century B.C. An open to the air, paved area around a well was excavated, while parts of other rooms, one with a fragmentary mosaic floor, were also found. A street (4.35-4.45 m. wide), running from north to south, separates house Γ from another house —B. The latter was accessible from the street. Its entrance led to a corridor-stoa separated into two parts; a small, rectangular yard was opened between them, while behind them, to the south and west, parts of rooms were excavated. House B dates to the late 5th or early 4thcentury B.C. Another building phase was discovered below the foundation ofhouse B, which dates to the mid-6th or early 5th century B.C. Filling of the late 7th or early 6th centuries were found above the soil. The filling did not yield remains of buildings. They must be related to the Klazomenian colony at Abdera, while the building phases dated after the mid-6th century, and thethree houses are connected with the second Tenian colony. Finally, the above finds suggest a constant habitation of the northern enclosure of Abdera, from the 7th to the 3rd century B.C.
