Abstract:
The mosaic floors of the southern and western porches of the atrium of the early Christian basilica at Palaeochora of Maroneia were detached and conserved in 1992.The detachment revealed new parts of the mosaic floor. There is no particular pattern of the motifs which represent flowers, birds, fruits and vases. The swans depicted south from the threshold of the atrium are characteristic. An excavation followed the detachment of the mosaic; the research yielded the southern and the western walls of the atrium, which had been destroyed by the mosaic and an early Christian building phase at the atrium, before the mosaic floor. Namely, a layer of hard soil and plaster was located under the substructure of the mosaic; this must be related to the use of the area before the mosaic. According to the data this is contemporary to the first building phase of the western wall of the basilica. Meanwhile, the mosaic floor is contemporary to the alterations of the western floor of the church and its annex southwest fromit. The lack of symmetry evident in the plan of the atrium and its divergence from the axis of the basilica were caused by the existence of Roman building underneath, whose walls were used as foundations of the early Christian walls of the atrium. Part of a paved floor, a stone-built well and part of a pipe of the Roman building phase have been excavated, while the earth fill which covered the area before the building of the atrium contained great quantity of late Roman pottery. The research also yielded evidence for the Byzantine buildings of the early Christian atrium: the plans of room 1 of building I and of room 1 of building II were completed. The findings of the excavation were the following: Roman and early Christian pottery. Byzantine glazed ceramic and coins dated from the 10th to the 13th century. A rare silver coin of Nicephoros Botaneiates was also found in building III
