Abstract:
Following a major illicit excavation in the cemetery of Ayios Hristoforos, which is connected with the ancient city of Gazoros, and the subsequent confiscation of many items of ‘Macedonian-type’ bronze jewellery, part of the 7th c. BC cemetery was excavated in September 2004. A total of 15 graves were excavated, 6 cist-graves and 9 cairn-graves. The predominant mode of burial is inhumation, with the exception of one cremation, and the orientation of the bodies is determined by sex. The graves are clustered in parallel rows, one of which is adjacent to a stone enclosure. The form of the cemetery presupposes planning and organisation, features which are absent in parts of it with later burials. The grave goods are placed inside the graves, the vessels at the feet, the rest, weapons and jewellery, in their natural place. The bronze jewellery consists of types known mainly from central Macedonia and the Balkans, while most of the clay vessels are wheel-made, with some made by hand. Their shapes vary: pithoi, amphoras, kantharos-shaped vessels, kylikes, cups, pro- choi, and skyphoi, many of them decorated with painted lines and bands. The finds compose interesting burial assemblages of the period, of which they offer the first evidence in the Strymonas area.
